Young People's Community - Ages 15 months - 36 months
A warm, nurturing environment prepared with sensitivity to the young child’s emerging personality.
- Fostering the development of basic trust
- Supporting the developing sense of self as a unique and separate individual
- Allowing the child active participation in daily routines of self care and care of their environment
- Allowing the child the freedom of movement and exploration in an appropriately prepared environment
- Allowing the child an opportunity to interact and develop social and communication skills with a small group of peers.
Children’s House - Ages 3 - 6 years
The environment is prepared for “planting the seeds for life-long learning” as the child begins to enter a more conscious level for understanding interactions with the environment.
- Children are respected for their inherent sense of order and individual plane of development. Children in this age span work both independently and with each other to learn both social and academic life skills. The younger child observes, studies and practices what the older child has an opportunity to role model
- Emphasis is placed on caring and respecting the self, others and the world around them
- Sensorial, didactic teaching materials engage all the senses as the child explores concepts of language, writing and reading preparation, Spanish, math concepts, art, science, music, and cultural studies
- An extended day is offered to the Children’s House student who is at least five years old, has been in the environment for at least one year, and shows readiness to engage in and contribute to lengthier activities. Small group projects, lesson extensions and physical education enhance the curriculum.
Lower Elementary - Ages 6-9 years
Upper Elementary - Ages 9-12 years
The foundations set by repeated experiences with concrete materials at the Children’s House level ready the student to move toward less concrete materials and abstract concepts.
- The curriculum is designed to meet the needs and characteristics of the 6-9 and the 9-12 year old and challenges students to problem solve, research, analyze, arrange and present information in a continually refined process
- The children at the elementary level are community oriented and experience very realistic lessons about living in accord with their peers and their everyday world
- Emphasis is placed on the integration rather than the independent study of subject matter, history, geography, cultural studies, art, music, math, science and language including Latin and Spanish
- Field trips are planned to heighten awareness and understanding of thematic study. Upper Elementary students partake in the responsibility of planning and making arrangements for such trips
- Specialists in Music, Art, Spanish, Physical Education as well as an annual theatrical production enrich and enliven the learning experience.
